Koitelainen Area

Magnus Minerals has recently applied for claims covering a gold deposit at Sakiatieva, located a few kilometres north of the Koitelainen layered intrusive complex and 80km NW from Savukoski, in Finnish Lapland. The deposit is within a sequence of Early Proterozoic greenschist facies, volcanic-sedimentary rocks of the Central Lapland Greenstone Belt, which contain thick sequences of komatiitic rocks that correlate with those hosting the Pahtavaara Gold Mine 50km to the SW.

The Geological Survey of Finland was drawn to the area because of the presence of very high gold values in the till obtained from regional surveys. From 1994 to 2000, GTK carried out till geochemical surveys, geophysical surveys, trenching and reconnaissance diamond drilling. Gold mineralization occurs within complexly-folded and faulted, intensely carbonatized, sericitic siliceous rocks in close proximity to ultramafic komatiites, in bedrock at Sakiatieva and Ruosselkä. Of special note are the potassium-altered rocks, quartz porphyries, tremolite-diopside skarns, quartz veining and intense, pervasive carbonatization (GTK report, Pulkkinen et al, 2005).

Quick Facts:

  • Gold mineralization is widespread and was locally tested over a strike length of 150 m in trenches and more detailed drilling.
  • Best trench values were: 4.8 g/t Au over 6.0m; 13.7 g/t Au over 7.0m; 3.1 g/t Au over 3.0m.
  • Twenty-seven shallow holes ranging from 36 to 150m were drilled. Gold values of several g/t were intersected over short intervals.
