Enonkoski

Enonkoski Nickel Belt

The Enonkoski Nickel Belt comprises 40km long sequence of Mid-Proterozoic supra-crustal rocks intruded by a number of syn- to post-orogenic mafic/ultramafic intrusions of various sizes along a major regional structural zone within the Central Ore Belt of Finland. The area is marked by a large regional gravity high. The only nickel-copper deposit of size found and developed to date has been the Enonkoski (Laukankangas) Mine which produced 6.7 Mt tons grading 0.76% Ni and 0.22% Cu from 1985 to 1994.

Hälvälä

Quick Facts:

  • Ni-Cu-Co deposit
  • Closed mine with remnant inferred resource of 200,000 tons
  • Potential to develop near surface low-grade resource as well as extension of know ore zones at depth and along strike
  • 39 holes drilled totalling 14,363m at 25m profile

Exploration History

Outokumpu Oy discovered the Hälvälä deposit in the early 1970’s and carried out exploration and development from the late 1970’s to 1988, when it was put into production. The mine operated for four years, yielding 250,000 tons of ore averaging 1.4 % Ni and 0.35% Cu.  Magnus holds claims covering the Hälvälä mine and the nearby Makkola Ni-Cu deposit.

Mine Geology

Hälvälä is the central portion of the Enonkoski Belt and is part of the Enonkoski nickel project Joint Venture through option agreement with FinMetal Mining Ltd. Hälvälä contains a historic reserve of 410,000 tons, averaging 1.59% Ni, 0.33% Cu and 0.075% Co. Accounting for prior production, Hälvälä is estimated to contain a remnant resource of 200,000 tons below the 265m level and is open at depth.

The deposit is along the north contact of a norite intrusion, which also contains un-tested zones of disseminated nickel sulfides. Country rocks are mainly sulfidic and graphitic siliceous schists.

Exploration by JV

Under the JV agreement, FinMetal contracted out 6000 line km of airborne geophysical surveys covering a large portion of the Enonkoski Belt and drilled two holes below the Hälvälä workings proving the downward continuation of the deposit.  Results are available in news releases

Potential

Past drilling at Hälvälä indicates the mineralization to extend to at least the 600-meter level and remains open at depth and along strike. The possibility exists that the norite body and mineralization at Hälvälä is continuous with the Makkola deposit located about 1km to the West.
